You could get one of those boards that have the holes drilled in them (that are used to hold tools in shops) and put in some of those little screw hooks to display each keyring. I think the other answerer is correct in that it is called pegboard. You could maybe let him paint the board before you put in the hooks so it's personalized too.

I have a similar problem with storing the various necklaces I make. I have a thing meant for keys and another meant for coats that I am using to put my works on for now.

A fast and easy way to create a display would be to but a couple of large cork bulletin boards and silver or gold push pins to hook the ring over. Using silver or gold would be better than multicolor since they would blend in with the silver or gold of the key rings and not compete with them for visual attention. The frame on the bulletin boards could be painted to match the rest of the room. If the display will be permanent, dip each pin tip in glue before inserting into the cork to anchor it.

I'm not sure but I think your 'key' hooks and my 'cup' hooks might be the same things. If you're only hanging one key chain per hook just about any of them should work. There's also plastic hook with glue on the back that you stick to the wall.
I had the peg board idea too, but once again, it's too late.

He could have a bulletin board with pushpins to display the majority of them, and keep the overflow in a baseball card book. Then he could change them from time to time, like seasonally. They could be sorted by business, sports team, fast food places, etc.

I would suggest a pegboard, too, but too late. I would get some "s" hooks, or even the plastic, self-adhevsive cup hooks to hang them on. The pegboard can be painted, and even framed.
