you could get one of each - pets love the company of other pets....
Shih Tzus are not very intelligent as far as dogs go.. a bit tougher to house train
Cats - I have cats they are great, I dont have a dog because they are alot of work.. walking, training etc... but cats are pretty good plus they leave you alone sometimes...
what ever you do NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - get your pet from a breeder (dog) or the SPCA or humane society (cat) pet stores over charge for low quality pets and they support a very cruel industry called "puppy mills"
taking a "free" kitten is never a good idea because the costs of shots and deworming are more than if you adopted one from SPCA that already had all those things done to it...
consider a cat - thousands of cats are euthanized daily simply for lack of homes

If you want someone always there for you, needs you all the time then a dog is a good option. If you want to be able to get out some evenings and not worry about your shoes and furniture then a cat is a better option. Both make incredible pets but can get used to being alone for longer period of times then a dog more easily whatever their race.

It depends on your lifestyle. If you won't be home a lot, get a cat. Dogs need to be taken outside and generally need more "person bonding time" than cats. Cats need loving and care just like a dog, but they usually won't develop destructive habits if left alone for most of the day.

Get yourself a cat. There's alot more homeless cats than dogs, and cats require less attention. They're neat, clean, and they like to cuddle and play, but they also like to have some alone time. You don't have to walk a cat or use a doggy cleanup bag, and you don't have to take a cat to obedience class. On the flip side, you'd have to clean a litter box, and cats like to sharpen their claws on carpet and furniture. Scratching shouldn't be a problem as long as you provide the cat with something for them to sharpen their nails on, like a scratching post.

Well I dont know your age, but why would it matter this far in advance???
I mean you may go through several phases of different animals to like by the time you are able to buy one as an adult...
You don't have to have it all narrowed down now...

Get a kitten. They're cheaper to buy, cheaper at the vet, easy to litter box train, fun to watch and they'll snuggle with you too. Plus, you can leave for the weekend and not have to worry about anyone having to take care of them. Oh...get two! One would be too lonely.

it depends on how much time you have to spend with the animal. cat's can be relatively maintenance free and quite independent. whereas dogs require alot of time and attention.
