In a defragmentation, your computer is attempting to access all the little scattered pieces of your files, and line them up in order. If you are using some of those files, the computer can not defragment them properly.

The result would be either an unconscionably long defragmentation, or a poorly done one.

Windows 98 SE, no way. You have to shut down virus scan as well. Every program intereferes with it.
But my new computer with XP has almost no trouble at all doing it at the same time. So if you have XP, you should be fine. But it does go faster if you set it up to run at night when you're not using it.

No. The purpose of defrag'ing is to rearrange the space on your harddrive. To run a program would defeat that purpose. It would be like alphabetizing a filing cabinet while someone kept removing files and putting them back out of order.

Yes, I do it all the time.

My friend has an older computer and is only able to run one other
program at the same time, so it will probably depend on what you
have. Just try it. The computer will let you know.

good luck
