If I am watching TV - say the History channe l- they will say " you are watching the history channel". If I switch to say the Discovery channel, they will say "you are watching the discovery channel". How the hell do they know ? I men I could be reading a book, playing tennis or even be asleep for all they know.

They don't know. So in a small percentage of cases the assertion will be incorrect.
Most people who hear these words must at least be listening to the channel in question. Otherwise they would be very unlikely to hear the words.
Perhaps you should suggest that, in future, a form of words is used such as: "You are probaby listening to the audio track of the History channel".

That's a good question. They know because there is a tiny transponder mounted in one of your teeth which relays your brain activity patterns to a mind monitoring / control room deep inside a bunker in Area 51. This is how "dangerous" subversives and free-thinkers are initially selected for further surveillance, wire-taps etc. Don't believe me? Bring me the drill!!!

They're only telling you what channel you're watching as a way to identify themselves. They really don't know what channel you're watching, and when you're watching it.

they're presumptious f*****s, those satellite channels. Best thing to do is slip out the door while they're preoccupied with talking about waterloo and baby seals . That should teach them.

They don't know, but if you are watching them when they say it, they are correct aren't they? They do know that someone will be watching and that is who they are referring to.
