You want them to complete their suicide mission, so you give them protections against stray objects that might hit them in the head and knock them out before they can crash their aircraft. After all, you don't expect the sailors to just let them fly thier aricraft into the ships unmolested, do you? The Japanese knew their men would be shot at, and while being shot at, the men would need protection from bullet spray so they could concentrate on completing their suicide missions. Make sense?

They never wore helmets, they flew the zero,s with the cockpit open, they only flew high enough to do the Kamikazi bit, and anyway they just wore headbands with the Emporers blessing or a prayer on them. Very brave young men with total commitment to the Emporer and their country. You could say the first suicide bombers.

Yes they did wear helmets but they incorporated headphones for radio communication,the headband was worn over this .
