That depends on what do you mean by 'safe'? Point to point software is perfectly legal to own and use. So, in that respect it is safe. Downloading files that are copyright protected is illegal so, in that respect it isn't safe. You are also at the mercy of the files you downloaded as they may contain a virus.

you download a client that then allows you access to all kind of files etc from the Web, is it safe, no. Certain files downloaded can be virused. Ensure you have complete protection against such things.
