There is nothing to be afraid of here. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps she feels the same way about you and, is afraid for the same reasons. If this is the case then one of you needs to be bold and get it out in the open. I think that it would be very appropriate as the man, for you to take the first step.
If you two are really good friends, letting her know you love her shouldn't destroy your friendship.

It's always been my policy not to screw your friends. Then if it doesn't work out things will never be the same again between you two. Really are you buddies with any of your ex girlfriends?

Ask her questions about what type of men she'd like to date +, or what-to her opinion- kind of girls would they be fascinated by you. So, she might reveal some hints about her feelings over you!
