The Mist hands down. He had me good until it was revealed what the creatures actually were. Great story.

Both of the ones you mentioned are great but when I first read your question I was immediately reminded of the first collection of short stories that I ever read from Stephen King and that was the collection called Night Shift. In that collection were several great ones that later became movies like, Children of the Corn, Sometimes They Come Back, etc. My all time favorite is in there too, 'Jerusalem's Lot. What a great story. I think that was the first time (oh so many years ago, lol) that I remember reading about a kid that was turned into a vampire and I remember actually being a little nervous for a few days, lol. Damn, what a writer. I love that man!

I just read The Mist two nights ago. I thought it was an awesome story. I've never read The Jaunt. What book is that in? I have a whole chest of his books. One of my other fav. short stories was the Apt Pupil. Email me I'd like to talk to you more about his books. myprtybutterflies@yahoo.com

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is the best Stephan King short story. I think The Mist is next. It has been 20 years since I have read that one and still remember almost all of it. Spookey.

Can I plug King, the non-fiction writer for a second here?
He wrote a great broadside blast at Court TV Interogator/Murderess Nancy Grace in the latest Entertainment Weekly. A really good righteously angry piece of social/media criticism.
I recommend it to the attention of King fans.

One of the Bachman Books - The Long Walk, it's either a long short story or a novella but for some reason I couldn't get it out of my head after I'd read it.

Look for his book of short stories that has "The Raft". Toward the end of it is a story about a kid alone at home with his grandmother. Don't want to give away the plot. I have read many of his books but this just seriously freaked me out.
