carnage is the spawn of venom. Venom is symbiotic combination of an alien and Eddie Brock. Both work together because they hate spider man. The Symbiotic helped spider man at first. Peter Parker found out it was using him and Mr Fantastic helped remove it and capture it. It got out and merged with Eddie Brock forming venom. Carnage is the spawn of the alien merged with another person. I do not have all the details concerning carnage its a little after my comic days.

Carnage is Cletus Kassidy(sp), Homicidal Maniac
as i under stand it:
Spidey found the sybiote(black alien goo) and bonded giving Spidey the Black and White suit. Spidey started to turn bad and freed him self from the symbiote. (how varies by source material.)
Symbiote merged with Eddie who was jealous of Peter becoming Venom. Having bonded w/ Peter, Venom knows his ID and can evade spider sense.
The Carnage symbiote is either a natural offspring of the Venom symbiote, member of the same species or a failed cloning attempt. (not sure, may vary by source material as well) Carnage found Cletus and they bonded. Venom and Carnage were a team for a while. I believe that Carnage was too nuts for even Venom and they went solo,
In the old Spiderman cartoon from Fox in the 90's had Venom jump into a alternate universe taking Carnage with him to protect a Lady Doctor who Eddie had feelings for, and was helping Eddie to control the Symbiote.

Carnage was once serial killer Cletus Kasady, and became Carnage after merging with the offspring of the alien symbiote called Venom during a prison breakout. He was originally conceived as a purely villainous counterpart to Venom, who was becoming an anti-hero. Kassay's past is uncertain.
Kasady has been separated from and re-bonded with the symbiote several times. The Carnage symbiote, attracted to stronger hosts, has attempted to bond with Ben Reilly (Spider-Man at the time) to become Spider-Carnage, and the Silver Surfer. Later, Venom decided to absorb the Carnage symbiote "for good." Without the symbiote, Kasady retained the Carnage persona by costuming himself in red paint and continuing his killing sprees (albeit as a powerless human). Soon after, Kasady found an exact replica of the symbiote in the Negative Zone. Why this symbiote is an identical copy, or where it came from, has yet to be explained.

venom is an alien virus that attacked sideman that a space station in the TV cartoon so now that venom feeds off the hatred side of spider man and wants to Marge with him
