There are plenty of Printer/Scanner's out there at the moment, if quality scanning is what your after then spend the money and get a decent one, if it's just everyday stuff then the quality of the combined printer/scanners out there is not that bad. You can always improve the scans in Photoshop...

A combined printer, scanner and copier they are so much cheaper together
If cost is a problem you may get a good second hand model from a computer store (with fax if it is useful)
Get a guarantee for at least 3 months - and remember the ink is expensive - buy non-proprietary brands

A lot of printers also have copy and scanner features.
A flat bed is a good thing if you're scanning from books or bound documents.
Hope this helps.

It depends on whether you want to scan or print.
They both do very different things.
Your question is a bit like asking "Should I buy bacon, or a screwdriver?".

Having said that, you can get excellent combo units for not much more than the cost of a scanner or printer by itself. I use one myself.

Get an all in one. We've got Lexmark x1180 and it's a printer, scanner, copier, and fax. It's great less than £70 too. We got ours from PC World.
