people say in old days if you found a penny coin it would turn your luck right around.But you had to hand it to the nearest person you see or family

Because pennies make pounds! Not many people will stop to pick up a penny, but they will if its a nice, shiny silver coin!
Go around your town and see how much money you can make picking up pennies!
I haven't actually ever done this, by the way!

my guess would be that when that saying came about a penny was still a coin that was worth something ( i mean you could get something for it) so finding a penny meant that you would be able to get something extra.

It is a pin, and not a penny, and there's a fuller version. It's based on superstition.
See a pin and pick it up,
All the day you'll have good luck;
See a pin and let it lie,
Luck will surely pass you by.

because when the phrase was 'coined' a penny was actually worth something. also penny referred to any coin.

I don't. I say 'find a penny, pick it up, and all that day you'll have a penny'. Much truer if nothing else.
