Probably King Offa of Mercia (757-796)
In the dark ages, Offa was a man who rose to kingship of his region of England, and then did something more - he became what was called the Bretwalda - king of kings, accepting fealty from other local kings to establish a new form of currency and a protective earthwork - Offa's Dyke - between England and Wales. A man of many kingly talents, his reign is a bright spot in an age of darkness. To be able to say that about myself would be a wonderful thing.
