Sam, Sorry to say but if you dont know I wonder how well you play. Just having a Gibson or a pair of david Beckham boots wont make you any better without work.
Clapton, Luis Bonfa,Carlos Santana dont play them. You'll just have to try it and see,
Break a leg brother.

First, a Gibson is a great guitar, but every kind of guitar has it's own sound. Check out artists you like and see what they are playing. (It will usually be listed on the liner notes in the album/cd)
To address the "a better guitar does not make a better player," answer you've been getting, that is true to a point. However, the better the guitar, the easier it can be to play for a few reasons... First, it already sounds a bit better, so you are less likely to get discouraged if you are starting out... Also the "action" of the strings can be a lot better, which will make it easier to move around, without tiring out your fingers so quickly and ripping them to shreds. If you play enough, it'll still haoppen, it'll just take a little longer.

If it's an original Les Paul Gibson then it would be an investment as well as one of the greatest guitars ever made - and the sound is special, provided you can play the guitar well enough to understand guitar sounds.
Failing that buy a late model (japanese made) Gibson. It's still s good purchase.

gibson is one of the best guitar in the world, it has a very good sound, nice pick ups, no fuss and complicated set-ups, it is worth investing money into a gibson guitar coz it holds it's value.
it has years of quality to back it, so every guitar that comes out is as the good as the first one, many musicians still prefers gibson because of the clean, clear sound it produce

Only if you really want that sound. Fenders play easier, hang more comfortably and are tougher, but their sound has bite rather than richness. If you need to ask, Gibsons are really not for you: get a Telecaster to be going on with.

You would notice the difference only if you are a guitar pro. Better guitars don't make better players.
