I have to say either Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, these two bands defined rock in a sense and really set out rock as a genre with their brillant guitar solos , riffs and vocals
Without them metal wouldn't have come about as a genre

Toss up either Led zeppelin, Robert Plant was so hot in the 70's and Metallica in the 80's-90's.

Technically /Compositionally it is David Lee Roth...Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, in the first album of his solo career...
Any rock band with two of the best guitar players and one of the worlds best singers performers must logically be the best...
But I choose the Frank Zappa (various bands) ...who produced about sixty prodigious albums during his career.
Ps) It is all a matter of personnal taste for gods sake..Music is a art form...you may as well ask
