In England, black cats are considered lucky and white cats unlucky.
In America it is the other way; black cats are unlucky and white cats are the bringers of good fortune.
In England if a black cat crosses your path you haven't offended the witch and she's passed you by (the cat either belongs to a witch or is a disguised witch), but in America the black cat's association with witches makes it a target for abuse not a good luck symbol.
If it crossed your path from the left it brought ill luck, but if it crossed from the right it brought good fortune.

Superstitions are irrational belief in things which remain unexplainable, mysterious and unravelled because of lack of sufficient light of knowledge and scientific temper.
Although spread of education, reasoning and scientific advancement are on the increase, they don't stop the spread and existence of superstitions.
In fact a lot of educated people also believe in superstitions. Primitive instincts, fears and beliefs are the backbone for superstitions. Emotional instability, religious orthodoxy, blind belief in irrational rituals, customs and practices make people vulnerable to superstitions.

I thought it was considered good luck if a black cat crosses your path. I've never heard anything about a white cat, but I always assume it must mean bad luck if a white cat crosses my path!

Historically, black cats were symbolically associated with witchcraft and evil. In Hebrew and Babylonian folklore, cats are compared to serpents, coiled on a hearth. Originally in Britain and Europe, a black cat crossing one's path was considered good luck; however they were also seen by the church as associated with witches. This association with witches possibly stems from pre-Christian Europe when witches weren't considered evil. In fact it was the church, who considered them unholy and pagan, who altered their reputation. The black cat was still usually seen as good luck, however in the USA and parts of Europe which were affected by the witch hunts the association with witches caused them to be considered as bad luck. In places which weren't affected particularly by witch hunts, they retained their status as good luck, and are still considered as such in Japan and most of Britain.
