I believe that singing is something which nearly everybody can learn. The big problem is that most people are shy of their voice and so don't project it.
Singing lessons can help, of course, but they tend to be too formal for most people. Really the best way to start is to 'get out there and sing' but it really helps if someone says 'that was nice - you have a nice voice!'
Believing in the song you sing is the best way to start. Pick a song that you like and means something to you. Think of the words and sing them like you were telling someone else the story or singing them to someone.
If you are singing in public (let's hope you do eventually!), look at the back of the room and imagine that your audience is right over there and they have to hear you.
Technically, if you feel your diaphram pushing the air out and you think of the sound as coming from somewhere around your forehead (I know - it sounds crazy, but it works!) you get a better tone.

Having a great sounding voice is inherited, but using what you have, beautiful or not, is learnt. Watch X factor auditions to hear people who can't use good voices, and listen to Mick Jagger to hear how much can be got out of a basically lousy voice with good technique.

nah, i don't really think that singing is inherited. but i do believe that you can learn how to sing. nothing is impossible, you know. and that is very reachable. if you can afford to have some voice lessons, then get one. but if you think it's impractical, then just sing your lungs out, after all, nobody will laugh at you... unless you have enemies. ^_^

haha I wish I could sing too! I dont think its inherited because my mom has a pretty good voice and I'm totally tuneless! you can get your voice trained though

The voice is a muscle, with proper training, you too can sing! There are numerous cds you can buy to help you out, just check out amazon.com.

Depends on what one would call singing. Different types of music vocals can be easily learned, others cannot be.

generally if you have parents who can sing, then u will have the ability to sing aswell.

I think it is a little of both. You are born with the talent, but it can be improved upon with lots of practice!
