This is due to the cobbling together of the English language from all over the country, where dialects were all but languages in the communities in which they were used.

We once did a little test where we looked for a word with the most meanings.
Believe it or not we came up with 5 or 6 for some words.
The actual words escape me at present though.

Because the English language is derived from other languages.. so I guess they took similar words from Italian or something and it stuck with a double meaning..

We have words that come to us from many languages and some of them are spelled or pronounced alike by chance. Other words had subtle differences in the original language but they now sound alike and may be spelled alike.

You think that's bad, you want to try British Sign Language. There are regional dialects which have signs that mean different things. EG:
Lesbian - Liverpool
Birmingham - Sausages
The list is huge. It's hilarious though!!!

because someone forgot the first meaning and made another one up and it caught on

Don't know - ridiculous language!!
Makes it really difficult teaching youngsters to read.
