1. Adaware personal should NOT unduly slow down your computer. It might be slow WHILE you're scanning the computer but once you close it, it should be back to normal. As long as you clear your browsers cache regularly and take some care with what sites you visit, there's no need to scan THAT frequently -- something like once or twice a month should be enough.
2. I'm afraid firewalls and anti-spyware programs have different functions in mind. While both strive to prevent your computer from being hacked or hijacked, the former attempts to stop hacking attacks by PEOPLE such as those who try to get in while you're online, B.O. scanning, and the like. Anti-spyware programs and antivirus programs, on the other hand, scans for and cleans PROGRAMS from infecting your computer.
3. You should therefore have both. That being said, however, and together with careful surfing and security management (in Tools>Options>Security), should make you have more peace of mind and have less of a need to do full spyware and virus scans.
4. Some good firewalls free for personal use (last time I checked) are Windows XP's own free firewall (!), Kerio Personal Firewall, and Zonealarm.

The first thing is that AdAware SE is NOT a firewall, its an antispyware. There are three main categories of security software; they are antivirus, antispyware and firewall. Antivirus protects your system from intrusion of virus, antispyware checks and removes most kinds of malware and a firewall blocks hackers from intruding your system. Anyway, AdAware does slow down your system, but its very nice. In addition to that, you keep two other antispyware program too:
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1
Spyware Terminator: http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Anyway, you also seem to be in need of a firewall. ZoneAlarm is the best among the freebies and also better than some paid ones:
ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en
Do you have an antivirus or not? If no, you can use the Clam AV which is embedded to Spyware Terminator. Don't activate it if u have got an antivirus.

Dear,
Firewall 1: Windows XP Professional/Home edition provides it own strong firewalls.
Firewall 2: Norton antivirus provides a strong & secure firewall for windows.
Firewall 3: Windows Defender (available for download only for genuine windows) also acts as a good firewall for pc in all means.
Firewall 4: AVG antispyware available for free download (www.ewido.net) also protects the pc well better than a firewall even if its not at all a firewall program.
