Don Revie changed the colour of the Leeds shirts to white as he wanted them to equal and surpass the Real Madrid side of the middle 60's who also played in white. As for the colour before that they played in a blue and gold stripe. The blue and gold kit had many variations and shades over the years but it actually originated way back to when they were Leeds City in 1908. I believe that from when they started as Leeds City through to the present day there have been 54 editions of Leeds shirts. Incidentally, did you know that The Don was a very superstitious person who believed that as Leeds had got to many semi-finals only to get beaten he believed there was a curse on Elland Road as the club had been built on an old Gypsy burial ground and he got a gypsy charman (holy woman) to lift the curse from there. The following year they won their first major title in europe. The inter city fairs cup in 1968, later known as the EUFA cup. It was changed to the EUFA cup in 1972 and Leeds were the first team to win that too. LUFC TILL I DIE!!!!

Don Revie wanted them to be like Real Madrid!!!
As for old kits, Toffs do a retro Leeds home kit in blue and gold from 1914 so I assume that these were their colours until the Don changed them.

That's news to me, as far as I know Leeds have always been in all white, well since the 70's anyway.
