Software
they are programs on your computer which you run.
For ex
Winamp is a software which plays multimedia read audio and video
Pc games are pc softwares
they are usually lines over lines of code written by the very popular 'programmers'. softwares are installed on your computer.

hardware
They are the physical components your computer is made up of.
the usual pc has the basic hardware components
Hard disk: It is the place where you store your softwares.
floppy drive and cd/dvd drives: these drives hold information on removable media(floppies and cds/dvds respectively)
mother board: this is the component which connects every other hardware component of you computer with each other
graphics card: Used to hold temporary video information
Ram(Random Access memory): this is used to hold temporary files of all kind
modem: your gateway to the internet
printer: you print pages with it

system software: they are the softwares you need to run your operating system or os. The os integrates everithing on the computer both the hardware and the software

firmware: they too are softwares embedded on some of your hard ware.
for eg: your dvd burner has a firmware which converts the information sent by your computer into something the writer understands which in turn burns your discs

Laurence, I can help a little, still learning a lot myself..Hardware is the actual physical components of your computer unit, the central processing unit (CPU, or in laymans terms the box) comprised of the driver, drives, mouse etc. Software are the various programs you have running on your pc such as windows and microsoft software like word, excel, power point etc etc. Systems software as mentioned by the previous respndents includes windows, the operating system and as far as i knew just sounds like a particular business has their own computer system they use like at the car dealership I work for, we use a system that is called "Voyager" it is supplied by Gateway, we used to use Systime supplied by Kerridge that was accessed via dummy terminals, Voyager is accessed via windows on the pc's we all now have, but it is not run through windows, it wasn't a software disc that was downloaded onto windows, we have a satellite receiving and transmitting broadband and the Voyager, and our accountants in Sydney have the same software and access and a lan line (blue cable like a phone line) links all our pc's together at the dealership. Firmware I think is just another name for a type of software, and how it is distributed like shareware, but I'm not a 100% sure. But the other respondents have answered, apparently it's a cross between software and hardware, go figure. All the best and God bless.

sounds like you need a three year course in computing, but........

Hardware - the physical bits that you can see and touch and blow away with a shotgun if they hiss you off - the stuff that comes in the box from the store.

Software - The programs you run. Intangible entities. examples would be Grand Theft Auto, Warcraft, various accounting, manufacturing, logistics packages etc.
Microsoft would like you to believe that WORD, EXCEL etc are software but they are in fact a special sub-class of software known as viruses - you didn't ask about viruses.

Systems software - operating systems like Unix. Again, microsoft would love you to say that WINDOWS(tm) is an operating system, but it is in fact a sub-class of VIRUSES (see above) known as TROJANS, or TROJAN HORSES - written by worms.

Firmware is a non-volatile combination of hardware and software.
At cocktail parties throw around the terms "EPROM", "persistent" and "bootstrap". The people who look confused don't really understand what you're saying, but have heard the terms before. These people are microsoft programmers.
