An athlete decides when he/she will work harder with his/her coach according to the events and meetings they want to participate. For example, an athlete that wants to participate in summer IAAF events could break up his training year in two halves, winter-autumn and spring-summer. The first half will include full recovery from injuries and the last cycle's full training, while the second will include intensive training (meaning about 25% more training hours, and sometimes even more) to be in top notch for the summer events.
