If you have a serious infestation then killing them is a bad idea - imagine the toxins of thousands of rotting dead snails in your tank.
You have the options of purchasing snail eating fish like certain loaches to keep them under control. Another option is to weight a piece of lettuce or spinach on the bottom of the tank and shut out the lights at night. Turn on the light in a few hours and you may find many of them converged on the vegetable and ready to be removed.
As mentioned, as long as the snails are not eating the plants, they are not a bad thing to have in the tank.

If you have a fresh water/ tropical community tank you can get clown loaches. They feed on snails. I have also put figure eight puffers in my fresh water tank, however this is not reccomended. Puffer fish are brackish ( half fresh water and half salt water) and tend to be very aggressive. All I did was double up on the aquarium salt when i did my water changes but I have no idea why they didn't kill my fish. If you buy your fish from a good fish store with trined, knowledgeable staff then they should be able to help you.
hope that makes sense. it's 4:00 am

Get a couple of clown loaches, they apparently feed on snails and should rid your tank of them.
Be thankful that you haven't got Malaysian live bearing snails in there, i have two aquariums full of them and they breed like crazy and bury themselves into the gravel when the light is on, If you flick the light on at night, there are hundreds of them
