can be so many reason for this go through these steps
click start > my computer > right click on you hard drive - then click properties > then tools > then scan your disk for errors (make sure both the check boxes are checked) you will then get a warning - just click yes - then restart your computer - this will then scan you hard drive for errors and fix them for you
goto into safe mode f5 or f8 when restarting
do a defrag within this mode (more efficient than normal mode)
look in the event viewer - click on start then right click on my computer > click manage > then select event viewer
three options - applications, system, security - click on applications and look for any errors - do the same for the system - these can give you vital clues regarding your system - might be a hanging application or a system resource maybe failing to load because of a corrupt driver - would need those details though to be a able to do a diag (Can always IM me - if im available) or google the results can give you clues
If you have got SP2 installed - looking the system properties - have a look a your virtual memory - make sure it is not set to high or best yet make sure it is system managed
delete any non essential files- click start - assessories - system tools - disk clean up
click start > type run >type msconfig > then click on the startup tab - should create a list with ticks in it - for a diagnosis reason > disable all (don't worry this is totaly reversable) - then restart
again go into msconfig - check the services > select hide all microsoft services > are these the cause of a slow pc?
do a check on the system files click start > run > type - sfc /scannow
also do a stress test on your graphix card

hope this helps

I see you have tried alot of different things. Have you tried to defrag? If so how long has it been since you did a fresh install? One thing that happens is that whenever you start adding more and more software they have parts of their programs run in the background even when they are not being used.
Next right click on your C drive and go to properties. run disk cleanup, then go to the TOOLS tab and click on defragment now.
Next hit CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and look at the applications tab to see what task are running, then click on the PROCESSES tab and see what and how many processes are running and at the bottom of that tab it will show you how many processes are running/ how much CPU Usage is being used/ and the COMMIT Charge. You should be able to tell if your system is being overloaded. If you click the PERFORMANCE tab you will see how much of your memory and CPU usageon a graph.
If there is a lot going on even after you have deleted as many unused programs as possible then try a fresh install of your Operating System. It is very good to do occasionally. Just save all important files/folders/Etc. before installing fresh copy then you can put them back in to your documents/music/Etc.

I had a similar problem, and still do sometimes.
With me, it was when I tried to go into spreadsheets through My Recent Documents. I even deleted some spreadsheets, but only then found it was the "My Recent Documents" that caused it to freeze.
I can access everything through My Documents with no problems. The error messages were telling me it was a data allocation problem... something to do with the first byte in the file allocation something or other...
All I know is that it's been fine since I stopped accessing spreadsheets through My Recent Documents!
I know - highly technical answer, but that's all I can tell you.
I ran drwatson32 and disk checks and everything, but in the end I could only sort it as I've told you.
Good luck!

Have you this new BT yahoo online protection bundle on your computer. The Norton firewall and antivirus are just a pain, as they will freeze your computer. Many people have been saying the same thing this week. I am going to disable mine and see what happens. I do have back up VS & FW I can use. Hope this may help you discover why your PC is freezing up

It depends on your OS. If your running Win98 then it has always been a little unstable. For Win2000 and XP, all you can do is use the Windows Update feature, make sure all the drivers are up to date and have the latest 'stable' version of Direct X. You could try to uninstall some software that might have caused the lockups.

Is there a certain app that you are running when the pc freezes or is it just random? Do you hear any odd noises from your pc when it freezes such as clicking or popping? What kind of pc do you have, what hardware are you using? Does it temparyily freeze or does it force you to hard reboot?

Probably a hardware problem - faulty RAM can cause lock-ups. Try changing one stick at a time and see if the problem goes away.
