At present (although there is an unsubstantiated rumour that this may be withdrawn shortly), UK citizens may vist the USA on the "Visa Waiver" scheme without having to apply to the USA embassy for a full (B2) visa.
Before departure from the UK, the visitor has to provide the airline with the address of the first night's stay in the USA. They then have to complete the green Visa Waiver form which will be stapled to their passport. The maximum stay allowed is 90 days. Any overstay is regarded as an offence, and the traveller will be denied future entry.
