I do not know how true this story is, but here it is.
This superstition (friday 13th) comes from the medieval period. On Friday 13th in a year that I can't remember, the church ordered a mass execution of all the Knights Templar. This led to the superstition that this particular day was very unlucky, and I guess the 13 myth comes from it.

It is rumored that 13 is unlucky because that's how many people were dining with Jesus at the last supper (the 12 Apostles plus Judas.) Then Friday was also supposed to have been the day of the week on which Jesus was crucified (Good Friday) and so was supposed to be an unlucky day anyway. Traditionally one never wants to get married on a Friday because it would bring instant bad luck to the marriage.
So that's how it works by my understanding.

It was on Friday, Oct. 13, 1307, that France's King Philip IV had the Knights Templar rounded up for torture and execution. The Knights Templar were an order of warriors within the Roman Catholic Church who banded together to protect Christian travellers visiting Jerusalem in the centuries after the Crusades. The Knights eventually became a rich, powerful and allegedly corrupt order within the church and were executed for heresy.
Why? the catholic church owed us more money than it could ever possibly repay. But we were tipped off. Most of us escaped.
We're still here.

It has to do with old school paganism. 13 is a number with strong feminine associations. It is the number of moons in a year and the traditional number of members of a witches coven. The Christians made it into an 'unlucky' number. Much like the Republicans of today, the christian missionaries of those days would demonize their competition.
