I recently learned guitar and now I can't ever believe I was so horrible. What I suggest, first of all, is that you learn to read music!!!! Never ever start relying on tabs completely. Don't just take the easy way out. But I say, go ahead and dive in. Join a concert band, or jazz band. But under all circumstances, do not join a rock or garage band!!! I'm talking trumpets, saxes, drums, trombones, and clainets here. Not the cliched rock band. Joining something bigger will teach you note reading, articulation, subdividing, and a whole selection of chords. I absolutely love music, and it's nice to try something different. Try some different sounds. A concert band is a great thing, and you'll most definitely learn a lot.

Yes the old phrase is true, practice.

Practice all the time. Learning proper technique is important and there are multiple site you can go to with massive discussion on this. I used to use www.mxtabs.net all the time (the forum section) because there are a lot of talented people there; not sure if the site's still up.

Something you can start doing right now is learning to hold the guitar properly. It's important to use the tip of your thumb on the back of the neck and use your finger tips on the strings...sort of like if you were to hold a ball in your hand...keeping your hand more open like that will increase your strength much faster and also increase your dexterity and accuracy.
