"hip-hop" is a term from the 1930s and the dance moves of the era by the urban youth in the dance halls (dancing to Count Basie, Duke Ellington, etc.) The term has carried over to define the music of urban, mostly black, youth today. unfortunately, many hear the phrase "hip-hop" and think "rap".
Because hip-hop seems constantly re-inventing and evolving (is it rap? is it actual singing with a fat beat? is it a particular beat?) for the past 7 decades... what do i think? i don't really think it's a type of music at all, but rather a combination of attitudes and lifestyle that combine several genres. There's no "Best Hip-Hop" at the Grammy's or AMAs.. there are awards for Best Rap and Best R&B. but interesting how VH1 just had it's hip-hop honors, and it was all rappers.
When you hear the phrase "hip-hop", don't you automatically think of "rap"? I can think of lot of music with people singing that could also be hip-hop... can you?
Compared to other types of music, it needs to further evolve. Hip-hop will always be the sound of the urban youth, i just wish there was more music, and originality, in it.
Believe it or not, you've asked a hard question.

Nothing compared to Jazz, but people will listen to what they like. The more people criticise Hip Hop the more popular it becomes.

It's innovative and always changing which I love. Makes a real change from some of the bland pop that is out there but I dislike some of the subjects of shallower artists where it's all about bling and b1tches - prefer deeper songs!

It sucks!!!! There is nothing original, it is all a production, They steal riffs...er I mean sample them, then put their own blabber into it! Hip Hop artists do not care about the music it's all about the money.

it all depends on your type of music. hip hop is my s**t but it's getting stupid and repetetive. like for example: there is a song out that goes..... chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side...theres even a dam dance for it!!! dum shyt. but hip hop will always be my second choice..right behind classic r&b
