Because the Bush administration is talking about a booming economy based on Corporate profits, which have risen dramatically in the last six years - but earned income has risen at a much lower 1.5% in that time, while cost-of-living(especially fuel, medical costs, interest rates) have risen dramatically.

The poor, in fact, cannot get by with one minimum wage job, and THIS useless congress has failed to bring relief to the working poor ...
by injecting into their minimum-wage increase bill a illegal maneuver to bar states from having higher minimums than the federal government, which would LOWER wages in many states. Many states have minimum wage increases on the ballot this November.

"The minimum wage has been stuck at $5.15 an hour for over nine years, making it the second-longest freeze in wage growth since the establishment of the U.S. minimum wage in 1938. The cost of living has risen 26 percent, but the minimum rate of compensation hasn't seen a value this low since 1955, and Senate recently rejected a proposal that would have raised the rate to $7.25 by 2008."
