Petrol is a Hydro Carbon. Vaseline is extracted from Crude Oil and is odorless. Some Perfumes are also Hydro Carbon based. Products you may be thinking of may not be Petrol based but Hydro Carbon based. Plastic, I think, is a polymer of a Hydro Carbon. Properties of a Hydro Carbon change after its molecules reconfigure to form another Hydro Carbon or its Polymer.

gas is a by product of petroleum. if anything, the smell you encounter when filling up your vehicle with gas smells like oil.
kinda like diesel has its own smell... so does gas.

a petroleum based product wont smell like gas because that smell isnt gas...its petroleum(oil) in its root form.
