First of all, make sure you didn't install an optical drive on the same cable with a hard drive. I've seen this problem too many times to think of anything else first. So, even if the settings are correct, put the optical drive and the hard drive(s) on different IDE ports.
If it's not the case, find out the specification of the device you installed on secondary master port, disable "Autodetect" and enter the specifications. Also make sure the master device is installed at the end of the cable and the slave - at the middle. I don't know why, but I had that problem too and worked out with this arrangement.

You will need to systematically track down why the bios is hanging. Disconnect all hard drives (HD) but primary. Check bios settings. Check HD pin connections (Master/Slave etc.). Check to make sure IDE/SATA cables are attached correctly to HD and motherboard. Depending on HD, some HD manufacturer computers have problems working with other HD manufactures. Is the problem solved if the HD's are switched? Check size of new HD to see if it within specs of older motherboard, bios, and OS HD? Does the drive show up under DOS command prompt? You may need to partition the drive for it to be seen.

You need to reset cmos........take the little battery out for 20 mins with the pc unplugged then replace and startup(put in a new batt if it's old)..........that worked for me every time!!!
