People tend to see things how they wanna see them. They'd rather believe you failed because you didn't try hard enough, rather than you did try and still failed.

They have a high opinion of you and thought you would do something spectacular. You can either decide to do even better or take it in a negative way.
But you did your best. After some time if you review it you will see things that you could have done better.
