No you do not need a phone line in order to be hooked up to your receiver..... I am a dish tech.... as some will tell you that you need one, they are only informing you of this due to saving money {$5.00 per month per receiver is the usual} DISH does however perfer that you do have a phone line hooked up to your receiver. but it is NOT required for you to have the DISH and fully functional channels...... hope this answers your questions. :)

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.
No if you have only 1 receiver in your home you "do not" have to connect the phone line unless you want to order PPV using the remote. You can order PPV also by going on line to your account you will only be charged for the movie.
If you have more than 1 receiver in you home, with out the phone line you will not be able to mirror your programming to the other receivers.
The $5.99 charge is a mirroring chg so you can get "independent" programming on each receiver.

It has two functions.

One allows hardline communication to your receiver... to help you of course- nod- nod- wink -wink AND has nothing to do with verifying your card ID.

Also allows you to upload information that YOU want to like choosing pay movie etc.

Initial 'programming' and 'verification' on install with your upload option.

Without phone plugged in your system will 'work' in receiving TV until 'update'/'verification' time.

Two it also ensures bill payment as most satellite TV owned by phone company.

Yes you do - but only because they charge you an additional $5 fee for it not being connected. This is their way to promote the movies they sell so you can order over the TV

With Dish Network it is no problem unless you want to use interactive services or PPV. You can still use PPV by calling Dish Network for each movie you want to purchase.
