I have seen many different versions of Photoshop in stores and on the intern
et, but I can't pinpoint the differences between versions. For example, what
's the difference between Elements and CS2? Or Elements 4.0 and 5.0?
Have they made a 5.0 Academic?
I've seen what this program can do, and would like a version myself, but I'm
new to this and would like some guidance please. I would like just some of
the basic stuff, until I get used to it, and then I'll get a full-blown edit
ion.
As I said, I'm new to this, but could you guys help? It's confusing and all
seems the same. Which one best suit my needs?

I am not really sure what the Elements one is but I can tell you what Photoshop CS is.
CS stands for Creative Suite - and means that it is part of the whole design suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Go Live, & Acrobat Professional.
The education version is really good value and you can buy it at http://www.educationsoftware.com.au/ but you can only buy it if you're a current student.
Hope this helps.

Adobe Photoshop CS is "Adobe Photoshop" ie. the expensive, industry standard, professional digital image manipulation tool. It was designed for use with photos, but is at this point, as much a tool for artists and web designers, as it is, for photographers. It has every feature known to man, and can be very complicated and intimidating to novices.

Elements, is a consumer grade package, that uses the photoshop core, but offers a subset of features, and a lot of automation aimed at allowing consumers to correct common problems automagically. Elements sells for a fraction of the cost of Photoshop CS.
