Nobody knows, although the director, Robert Zemeckis, did joke at a Q&A session he was giving to some college students that it contained a "waterproof, solar-powered, satellite phone."

You can hear him say it on the DVD, apparently, if you happen to have it. It's an easter egg of sorts, and instructions are listed in the source URL.
