She won silver AA (which was a controversy), 3 golds in the individual events and tied Nadia's 7 perfect scores.

From my research, she got five 10.0's at the World Championships in Rotterdam, but mistakes in two other events cost her the world title. Still an amazing feat, but AFAIK, seven 10.0's has never been duplicated.

Nadia wasn't controversial in any way. She was so clearly the best and excelled in an elegance and grace of style that was also technically superior.

Training regimes changed soon afterwards and weight training became de riguer for female gymnasts following Mary Lou Retton. Technical skills have increased, but the grace has been lost. Not that it's worse, it's just different. Nowadays, what sets the top gymnasts apart is often subtle matters of precise technique that the general public isn't knowledgable enough to pick up on.

The was also less competition at the top back then -- now it's very crowded. Or maybe it's more that Nadia moved the top so much that no one could compete with her. And she did so in a way that was easy for the public to see and appreciate it. She sparked a tremendous interest in gymnastics and helped carve out a place in the public mind for women in sport.
