the little light on the bottom of a mouse makes your whole fingertip glow red - but you can't see the insides.. what is going on?

Its the calcium in your finger nail that reflects it.

Human tissue is relatively transmissive to red light. However, the red blood cells diffuse the light, i.e., like ground glass.

If you get a strong enough red light, like a laser pointer, you can see the faint shadow of your pinky finger bone.

Also kind of cool is that the laser speckle from a laser pointer, when placed against your flesh will vibrate and move, caused by the constant motion of your red blood cells

Maybe because the finger is thin and it has more collagen
