Depending on where you live , there are lots of pets you could get. A turtle is a nice pet if you have something tall enough to keep him in. We had one in the house in a box, and somehow thru the night he would get out. Cats are nice if you have a male one, but females multiply rather fast. Fish are nice. Once my boy decided to collect tadpoles from the ditch and put them in the fishtank, that was fine, we watched them swim around and go thru changes, next thing they were hopping on the floor as frogs, it was time to take them out. They are natural pets that can give a learning experience such as locusts-keeping them til they shed their old shell, moth to butterfly, these types of pets don't cost to feed or keep. Then if you want to buy a cage, a parakeet is nice, also.

Having any pet is a wonderful experience for children and the family. Its also an important responsibility. It should be a pet that everyone agrees upon, or the majority. This is a personnel endeavor, a new family member. Time should be taken in researching a lot of factors. What is your budget for the purchase and upkeep? vet, food, medicines, additional..toys etc. How much time can you and the family spend with the new member? What space can you provide for it? Do you want an inside or outside pet? You should study on the the type before bringing a finally chosen animal home so your prepared. Personally, you can't beat a kitten. Some of my favorite pets when I was a kid was (my horse) also, a ferret, chicken, potbellied pig, goat and miniature horse. Have fun with what ever kind of critter you and yours decide.

Goldfish are great pets.
Hermit crabs
Tortoises, look into Russian Tortoises. They stay small and are vegetarian. Have the kids wash their hands after handling (they have to after touching most pets anyway) and they will be safe from Salmonella.
Believe it or not, rats make wonderful pets. Like dogs they are loyal, have a "pack" mentality, are VERY smart, and funny. They have great personalities and are sort of like the dog of the rodent world. They get to a size that the 3 year old will be comfortable holding it without the danger of squishing it.
Avoid rabbits and chinchillas. They are fragile and can be cranky.
Also, hamsters, contrary to popular belief, DO NOT make good pets. They bite and smell. Not to mention stay awake and running around all night making a surprising amount of noise.

I had a chinchilla named moussaka once when I was younger...

It would be a great pet because they roll around in dust and it is funny to watch and the dust makes them more hygienic than say a hampster a rabbit or a guinea pig and they are SUPER soft. They are docile and calm little critters. and they look a little like a furby!

. You don't need to walk them or clean out a littler box or anything like that... Just keep them in clean dust and make sure they have wood to chew on they are fine!

My best friends cat killed it.

I'm a kitty lover and have a wonderful best girlfriend in my cat ZoomZoom. Ok don't laugh, she loves that commercial and song. Hamsters and guiena pigs are nice but there nocturnal and can bite. For kids that age i would suggest a cat, a kitten and make them take responsibility for it's care. Good training for any kid.

I have read that a hamster is a good first pet to teach a child responsibility in caring for an animal.

this might sound weird but i like the idea of keeping earthworms just for the heck of it.

but seriously, if your kids are active, dogs are the best. then there are the cats and your regular rodents... (hamsters, chinchilla, guinea pigs...) you could also keep turtles, tortioise and frogs.

fish pets have a calming effect on people. plus they are cute.

and you could always feed them worms.. ^_^
