(1) BIT- a single binary digit either 0 or 1. As Bit word formed from Binary digIT i.e. B from binary and IT from digit i.e. it is contraction of binary digit.
(2) BYTE- a combination of 2 nibble or combination of 8bits. 1 nibble means combination of 4bits. For ex. 11110000 (base 2 i.e. binary) consists of 8 bits which is equal to 240 in decimal. In this ex, 1111 is higher order nibble while 0000 in lower order nibble.
(3) WORD- A combinations of binary digits which may be 8, 16, 32 or 64 depending on the microprocessor or microcontroller. Bec. Microprocessor or microcontroller data bus depends on the combination of digits which can be handled by it. so a word is that combination on which ALU (arithmetic logical unit) of the microprocessor can perform arithmetic and logical functions. While also it can read/write at this capacity to/from the peripherals i.e. the units which are interfaced with the microprocessor such as memory, input/output devices.
