You know, the type that's lugging stuff along the Interstates - Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Scania, ... the big ones. I was wondering what they devour as they go, mainly because I noticed that they seem to have an awful lot of gears, and I'm wondering if, because of that, they're a lot more economical than you'd think...
Any takers?
Thanks.

Bitburgerpilsman is correct in his assessment of Nick's answer.

Starrwoode is closest to correct. Heavy duty tractors from 15 or 20 years ago would average 4..5 to 5.5 miles per gallon, The computer controlled, fuel efficient tractors of today will have engines that operate in the 6 to 8 mile per gallon range. The last tractor I drove before retiring had a Cummings variable horsepower engine that got a documented 7.145 MPG fuel consumption average.

About 6 to 8 miles to the gallon. That's why they carry anywhere from 150 to 300 gallons of fuel.

There are appx 10 gears, and they average about 10 mpg.. but keep in mind that the average tanks are like 100 gallons, and there are 2 of them.. depending on the manufacturer.. it also depends on whether they have a full load, or empty.. and if they are going up hill with a full load, the milage is like 5 mpg.. there are many variables to determine the milage on any given truck..

It's the heavy loads that they pull only 8 or 9 mpg.
