Well, in terms of public recognition, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award given out by the United States. It is designed to recognize individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." I think approximately 5-10 are awarded per year, around the 4th of July.
