I have been a nail biter since as far back as I can remember. I have often times chewed off way more than I should have and have started myself bleeding more times than I'd care to count.

It will heal itself just fine. Perhaps a bit tender for the next few days, but it will heal. Just leave it alone, and oh, that little tiny hangnail you like to gnaw on till it's gone? Leave that alone too :)

Hello Lil_carebear2001,

First of all: eating your cutticle is NOT a normal form of nail biting, and it is very likely that this results in infections or some other sever nail problems. Therefore .... I must advice you to consult you doctor / general practitioner.

Secondly, ... in modern academic psychology nail biting is considered as a form of SELF-MUTULATION. Therefore you should become aware of the psychology behind your unwanted habit. You can read more about the psychology of nail biting at:

Wishing you all the best from The Netherlands!

put antibiotic cream on it to prevent infection. dont cover it so it can scab up and dry a little or it might get worse because a band aid might make it stay soggy if it gets wet. but make sure to keep it clean and don't irritate the skin too much or else it might swell up. personally i would have some one else look at it and ask for their opinion. if it really hurts and has swollen up already, chances are it is infected and you might need antibiotics. otherwise, let it relax and hopefully it'll heal itself and your skin will grow over the exposed cut and your nail will grow back in a month or so. good luck! and dont bite your nails anymore =)

See a doctor about the thumb and get psychological help. You need to stop biting your nails. Not an easy thing: I used to be a nail-biter too.

Good luck!

You just have to give it time to grow back. I did the same thing in a different way to my middle finger, and the nail will grow out to how it used to be. However, it will hurt for a while. Sorry!

make sure you keep it clean! as even if you have chewed the nail away you could still end up with a whitlow, best thing is to soak in salt water[it doesn't hurt] then put a very antiseptic cream on it.[stop biting your nails i used to but got over it and have since always been complemented on my nails"]

put a bandaid over it till the nail grows back. it should start to feel better in a couple of days once the skin hardens and it loses some of the sensitivity.
