Of course we're all influenced to some degree, but since everything influences us in one way or another, that IS what makes us who we are. In that respect all of our tastes are still ours. I have no problem admitting that I've been influenced by people I respect and admire as well as my political and religious beliefs. However, I feel pretty confident in the formulation of my own tastes. I am, after all, a guiltless fan of pop music. It all started with N'Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye." I was a closet fan of the song. I finally came out of the pop closet when I admitted to the world that I like Enrique Iglesias music (with the exception of that wretched song "Hero"). I knew then that I like whatever I like, regardless of whether I should. I even like that "Stars Are Blind" song Paris put out, and I'm not too ashamed of it. Well, sort of I am. It's a good summer song though!

I LOVED your response about illegal downloading and Lars. I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks he's a whiny little girl.

My tastes in food?

They're completely my own. I like what i like, i hate what i hate. That's just the way it is with my tastebuds.

My likes?

I grew up playing hockey and i love it. My parents got me into it but i wouldn't have continued playing if i didn't like it.
Music makes me happy. No one else dictates my tastes because at the end of the day, i'll listen to whatever i please.
Writing. My mom taught me how to write. But i don't write for her. When i write, it's my thoughts and emotions. No one else invades my actual thoughts.
Reading. My mom taught me how to read. I love it. I love books that just appeal to my senses.

My dislikes?

Ignorance, arrogance, stupidity, *********.... these are all things i've learned to dislike through experience.

My religion?

I was born a Muslim.
But after actually learning about it and reading the Quran and just asking questions, i still feel that it's right for me.

I make sure to reaffirm what i like just to make sure i actually want it and am not doing it out of habit.

In regards to a subject i know close to nothing about, my opinions are greatly influenced. They're not really my own until i've personally read about the issue or experienced it firsthand. Do you get what i'm saying?

In the end, they're all mine.

I've adapted...

I listen to what i like, i read what i like, i pray how i like, i eat what i want, i sleep when i want, it's all me.
It has nothing to do with anyone else when i'm sitting alone in my room or just alone in general.

My tastes and preferences are my own. Some are somewhat like-products of what I was raised around but never from preferences of friends or media. They are mine because I have them and use them and rely on my own choices. If I chose preferences because of media or friends, school, etc., then I would not be true to myself and then the preferences would be false. I could not live with that because I must be true to myself to function properly!

Actually, for me, it was observing others, and experimenting for myself. Trial and error. A lot of error.
