Every conscious act gives 'meaning'. Maybe war does that collectively. The real question is what sort of meaning that would be.

Yes.... everything we do gives us meaning. Its is societies view that determines the interpretation of that meaning. As individuals, war means nothing.... it is only a fight. As a whole society, war could be good or bad, just or unjust, founded or without cause. It all depends on who's talking about it and who's listening. (If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around... does it make a noise when it falls?)
Sometimes the discussion of war is as arbitrary as war itself.

War is a force which, Unfortunately, DEFINES us, not so much that it gives us meaning. Warring is as old as humankind. It stems from fear. Ironic huh? The most "intelligent" of earth's creatures....yet the most destructive!

War offers a false meaning. Those who go to war often talk of the brothership, the glory and the honor of serving. It is commendable to engage in such an act and to make the ultimate sacrifice for your country and loved ones, but it is not by any means a moral solution. By engaging in war, you are turning to violence to solve a human conflict. There is no glory in this. It is true that at times cultures may have felt the need to engage in combat to solve the problems of the world, but this is not a victory. True courage is the ability to end conflict without engaging in conflict. If societies in the past felt the need to make war, either preemptively or in response to another's agression, it is not a triumph but a failure. A failure worthy of our pity it may be, but it is still a failure. The societ that counters violence with violence has failed to find a peaceful means of ending conflict. Although at the time, and even now, we may have believed that there was no peaceful solution, this is wrong. There is always a peaceful solution, although we may not realize it. We may look at the conflicts of our countries past as a great triumph over evil, but with time a certain sorrow for those who gave their lives begins to arrise. As we begin to realize that the cause of such conflicts was humanity itself, we begin to realize that humanity could have solved the conflict. It is impossible to talk of Ghandi in the same sentence as Eisenhower. Although Eisenhower ended a war by wining it, Ghandi prevented one by not fighting it. Ghandi spared more lives than Eisenhower gave and took. It is illogical to claim the pacifist is weaker than the warrior when he can end a conflict as efficently.

I think man is a tribal creature. We have a need to be attached to a group, and that causes us to be suspicious and hostile towards outsiders. Threaten our tribe and we'll threaten you right back. Attack us and we'll attack you. Even in times of relative peace we have an urge to make enemies, it makes us feel our bonds to the group stronger. Leaders know this and use it.
