Don't do anything dishonest at this stage of the game. Be honest about your record. Dishonesty is why you have a record in the first place. Get past it and get into a new mindset. The fact is there are some fields you won't be able to work in with a record. Accept it and keep looking for satisfying work in other fields.

If they are going to do a check, and you know something is going to show up, be honest about it. Fess up. If you are open about it, and explain that it was a long time ago and you were young and stupid, they may understand and give you a chance. Your other option would be to try and get your record cleared or sealed or something, but that would involve a lawyer. You could try for a job with a small business, they are less likely to run a background check.

I'd suggest looking into another line of work that doesn't require a background check.

Sometimes if your record isn't too bad, and you've had no recent problems, you can get things expunged from your record. You'd need to consult a lawyer on this.
