Wow, what a lot of well-meaning but stupid answers.

Depression has a lot of causative factors, but that's not really important at the moment. What the person neglected to think of when she it would pass was that one way it "passes" is when the person commits suicide.
First off, understand that what you have is real, and that people who don't understand it don't have it. It's like a white person telling a black person to "just get over" feeling discriminated against.
Anyway, depression is chemical, but many of the ways to overcome are not. Exercise is a great way to counter depression's effects, but some people dig themselves further into a hole by biting off more than they can chew. So start by walking, even if just to the mailbox, every day.
It doesn't really matter how far or fast you go. The key is to do it regularly. Moving your body, as one person pointed out, releases chemical that will help.
Also, if you feel overwhelmed by the events in your life, try to find someone to talk to. When you're depressed, it often just feels like too much trouble, or that no one wants to listen to you. Often times we make that so by constant complaining, until our friends stop inquiring into our lives.
If you have insurance or can find it affordably, counseling is a great way to get some perspective. An experienced counselor has helped lots of people in your situation, and can help you make it back to your old self.
Lastly, take depression seriously. It's not you, but rather a condition you have. It can ruin or end your life if it's not treated, so decide to fight it, using the help outlined above. There's no shame in getting help, or making small steps. After all, is there any shame in doing the same if someone has diabetes or cancer?

Good luck, and you can make it through this.

As I can see my most of the answers here, we should all just exercise, and buy things. Depression is a chemical imbalance. Professional help is needed, a combination of medication, therapy, diet and exercise will help you get back on track. Most people can not fight it alone with just exercise and diet. You need to consult a doctor and together decide what to do to combat this disease. Feeling better overall may take time but patience is the key!!!

A lot of people don't understand what depression truly is. So ignore those comments such as "read the bible" and "tough it out". Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain. A doctor could probabaly help. However, other activities that release endorphins or other "Feel good" chemicals in your brain could help as well.... eg petting an animal, exercising

Don't be afraid to get professional help. It is not a weakness to get help for yourself. You do it for your car don't you? Aren't you at least as important.

As some of the above say, though, exercise is a great energizer and tension reducer. If you need meds, exercise anyway. Meds don't work overnite by the way. Fight this. You're worth it honey.

Good luck!!!!

When I am down, I usually go out for a long walk, or sometimes for a very long bike ride. as it seems to help me to sort things out, but being down normally and being depressed are vastly different so perhaps you should ask a professional ?

well a good way to start you path against depression is to go to your doctor and speak to them about it. Then find out what makes you sad....exersise can help a lot and so can a change of diet.

I had depression that was cured with a good ole pet. Who was there to love when i was blue. Also writing feelings in a journal to give the doctor helps in your diagnosis.

It may be that your not depressed but something more serious like being bipolar.

You can go out an exercise all you want to and your depression will still be there. You can keep yourself as busy as you can and it will still be there. Counseling, great idea if you want to talk. First of all identify what makes you depressed. Can you change it? Is it one thing that is making you depressed of several? Once you recognize what the problems are and resolve them you will not be as depressed. Talk to a Friend. See if they can give yo advice.

Become aware of your own self talk and when it's negative, change it. Know that negative thoughts attract negative thoughts which leads to negative action and to negative reaction. At all cost, avoid using negative words. Encouraging words when dealing with anyone, especially to your friend, family and to yourself, are paramount.

The main thing causing depression is a lack of dopamine. The #1 thing to bring it back naturally is exercize, which one can do at ALMOST any age. (80's +, maybe not)

Or... prozack, commonly referred to as the easy way out.

Help others, do some community service. Living solely for yourself can be burdensome. Try looking at the needs of others.
