punk rock is a type of music that began in the 1970s with the Sex Pistols and The Ramones, as well as The Dead Kennedys, among others. The lyrics are generally about being against authority, displaying individualism, and the rhythm is pretty fast-paced and energetic/frenetic. Usually includes drum set, electric guitar, and electric bass.
The style is more definitive of punk than the music itself, it seems. Mohawks, multiple piercings, leather jackets adorned with spikes and studs, etc.
In my opinion, punk died in the 1990s, but there are still bands trying to make it as punk. (My favorite punk bands include Bad Religion, Rancid, The Ramones (R.I.P., Joey and Johnny) and The Clash (R.I.P., Joe Strummer); a good band that is considered punk is the former band called Jawbreaker-- they rocked!)...anyway...

here's a pretty good article on punk rock:

"Punk rock is an anti-establishment rock music movement with origins in the United States and United Kingdom around 1974-1975, exemplified by bands such as the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, The Damned, and The Clash.

The term punk is used to describe the associated subculture, involving youthful aggression, specific clothing styles, ideologies, and a DIY (do it yourself) attitude. Historically the cities of London, Manchester, New York City, Detroit, Washington DC, and Los Angeles have been punk's breeding grounds."
