My friend recently sent me some songs over MSN. They're in a format that's just called "File", like on My Computer under Type it just says "File", not mp3 or wav like it usually is. To play the file, I have to specifiy which program I want to open this file on, so I choose Windows Media Player and the song plays fine.

I want to put these songs onto my iTunes and onto an audio CD, but to do that they need to be in mp3 or wav format, not this crazy general "File" format.

I'm totally computer illiterate, like you can't tell, lol. So I'm assuming that I have to convert it or something with a program, or is there a way to specify the type of file that this is?

I'm so confused, any help would be awesome.

The files are just named improperly. Rename them to Mp3 or Wav. There is no "general file format", that I am aware of, it just does not exist.

Highlight the file, press F2, and rename the extension to .mp3.

hey when its working fine with media player then prolly its a mp3 or wmv file..

when u choose the program there is a checkbox which means using the same program for all the files of same type.

select the checkbox and then try.

or try chekcing the properties of the file there u can see the extension of the file.

or copy the file and save it in a different location and now change the file name by suffixing with .mp3 or .wav and now u check if it works....

hope it works...
bye

Yes. Now, complete the question - say "How do you convert wav files into MP3?". Oh, well, that's easy. Easiest if you've already got iTunes? Do you?

What is the filename's extension? Is it *.wav, *.wma, or what?

Windows might be hiding the extension. Right-click it and do Properties and find out the full name. Then the file extension should tell you what kind of file it is.

Then someone should be able to tell you how to convert it.
