American Political System: The vehicle used by the rich and powerful to insure that they remain rich and powerful. :-p
Generally, liberals like big government on a federal level as far as social welfare programs and the financing of same, but are against government interference in moral issues. Conservatives prefer states to govern their own social welfare programs, and favor privatization. Those examples are only a small part of it. These are generalizations, and there is much more to it than that. Paradoxically, the lines between liberal and conservative are blending (as evidenced by the term neo-conservative), even as the country becomes more polarized between the two. Historically, members of the Republican Party were viewed as conservative, while Democrats were often labeled liberal. Republicans were generally the wealthier faction, with Democrats being more "blue collar" or working class. Again, these are generalizations - there are plenty of liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. The party lines in the US also are becoming blurred to an extent on many issues, and the polarization is between liberals and conservatives. One of the problems with these terms (liberal/conservative) is that they have come to mean different things to different people, and therefore are becoming meaningless. Both Democrats and Republicans can be either liberal or conservative on any given issue.

Liberals think we have a lot of work to do to make this a better place, conservatives think we have a great place and have to do a lot of work to keep it that way.
Republicans, today at least, are monocultural oligarchists, generally plutocratic and aristocratic. Look up those words and you'll be able to make a lot more sense of decisions in a system controlled by them.
Democrats are multicultural bureaucrats, still aristocratic but tending towards socialism.
Republicans claim to hate socialism, but they really like it when it comes to the military and police industrial complex. They imply that liberals and democrats are socialist, and some come out and say it, but liberals and demorats tend to be successful business people.
It's not just a political system, it's a social/political/economic/ecological system. Since bribery is legal here, the political and economic system have merged together at the expense of the social and ecological. This is why the state of west virginia is now flat and there is a big drug 'problem'.
The system will not change until people stop getting their news from television, and start reading and communicating more seriously with one another.
Maybe even on Yahoo! Answers.....
A few more things, pay attention to the deficits, the currency market, the nasdaq, Henry Kissinger, technological innovation, the price of oil, nuclear weapons, election fraud, the electoral college, the bill of rights, men worried about the size of their d***s and authority in general.
Then all you have to do is derive all the decisions made behind closed doors from inadequate reporting, and you'll have it down.
Good luck! I know, It's F****d Up!

Liberals think of of we've different paintings to do to make this a extra clever place, conservatives think of of we've a brilliant place and could desire to do different paintings to maintain it that way. Republicans, interior the famous-day a minimum of, are monocultural oligarchists, many times plutocratic and aristocratic. look up those words and you have got the skill to make lots extra journey of judgements in a kit controlled by them. Right now it'a frick'n mess. Their all the same with just different labels. Our political system has lost it's way due to greed and power. Congress no longer represents the American people, they represent themselfs and their own self interests. As long as we keep voting the same politicians into office, it' not going to change. It's called the "good ole boy system" .The Bushes' are the ring leaders,

Sure I could explain it. Got time to read about 20 pages worth?
I'll stick to the terms you brought up.
We are a representative democracy. We vote for people who make decisions for us.
Three branches of government, all designed to keep an eye on each other:
Executive Branch (President) - enforces laws
Legislative Branch (Congress) - creates laws
Judicial Branch (Supreme Court) - interprets laws
The terms you've mentioned have different meanings and degrees depending on the country and culture you're in. They have some tendencies, so we can define them.
Two main political parties:
Republicans (conservative, small government, power resides with the States)
Democrats (liberal, big government, power resides with the Federal government)
Social Ideals:
"Conservative" - supportive of the ideals of institutions such as military, family, universities, schools, private institutions, churches
good conservatives: believe in individual responsiblity, the judicious use of force when necessary, bringing up children with good values and traditions, people of good character, leaders with strong moral values
bad conservatives: forget that they were young once, tend to be self-righteous, have a bad reputation for helping poor people, tend to spend money only on themselves or other rich people, can be racist out of fear or contempt for others.
"Liberal" - supportive of "progressive" social change, such as homosexual's rights, civil rights, multiculturalism, political correctness.
Good liberals- Look for social justice where it has been long denied, enact government programs that may help people, believe that government exists to help others,
Bad liberals- Can be fascist about their own belief systems of "justice", don't have anything except social change to define them, can become elitist due to concentration of power, can be racist and hypocritical for elitist reasons, can lose focus when in power and simply destroy institutions

In "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995), it says:
"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

Two definitions: A liberal is a person who believes in rapid changes in governmental structure.
A conservative person wants to keep things as they are.
Those are the basic Definitions.
Liberals want constant change and Conservatives want to keep status quo.
It is as simple as that
