Our public schools teach children to learn complicated esoteric mathematics and memorize specific dates from history and all kinds of other useless information, but never seem to get around to teaching children how to approach one another and be a mature responsible human being. I think public schools should be required to have a class in teaching children how to learn responsibilty, manners and empathy...Does anybody else agree with me? It seems like our country is full of air heads who have alot of technical information but have no ability to understand how to treat one another.

I don't think it should be the responsibility of the parents, because ultimately society will have to deal with these people, not always the parents and in many instances the parents do not teach their children how to behave. School is a great opportunity to teach children how to feel empathy for one another learn responsibility and to grow into good people...Instead of people who are really smart a$$holes.

I think that should be a job for parents. Schools can only be held responsible for so much.

Just because parents don't do it, it does not mean that it is not their responsibility.

Maturity, manner and responsibility should not be a class, but a life long process. Giving a child homework and expecting them to do the homework, neatly, correctly and get it handed in on time teaches responsibitlity. As responsibility increases so does maturity.

Manners, that is everyday...please and thank you, talking quietly, eating properly..that is all of the time.

And by the way, todays kids are not that well educated, if you want the schools to do more classes, you better plan on an increase in school taxes and fights over longer school days. I would rather they learned life skills, like balance a check book and know how much carpeting to buy, how to sew on a button and change oil in a car. How to know when they might be pregnant, what causes it and how to prevent it. (Look at the questions on here!). Kids to day know everything and they know nothing.

Although it should be mainly the responsibility of the parents, schools should take some responsibility in teaching students respect, responsibility, etc. As an early elementary teacher I have noticed that the time that used to be spent in kindergarten focussing on social skills is used now for academic purposes. There is such a push from the community for kindergartners to be reading that social skills are put on the back burner. There are days where there is not the time in the day for children to go out and play which is the best time (along with lunch) for children to learn and practice social skills. Teachers really try their best to do everything for the children. I guess there is just not enough time in the day to do it all.

You have hit the jackpot.

EXACTLY! Public schools are so firm in teaching such useless things. No subject in school (english, math, science, humanities, language, music, computer technology, etc) even compares at the slightest to the skills you have just mentioned. Just an extra 30 minutes a day teaching students about such crucial things would improve society from 2 to 6 in a scale of 10. We need to reform the educational system. We need to unite ourselves!

Required book for reading:
- How to Make Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carneige
- How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, by Dale Carneige
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey (for high school and higher)

Society would become so much better with such changes. Wouldn't you agree?

PARENTS! What can they do! Yes it might be their responsibility, but JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITY DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY CAN FULFILL THEM! IT'S NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!
Such changes in the educational system would be so much effective, people. THINK ABOUT IT.

This Type of education is Long Over Due!
Common sense has been eradicated from Society!

It's all about Living For now, and "Screw anyone who gets in my way" Attitude that people seem to have adopted!

Yes, I agree with you. Parents do have that responsibility, but too many of them don't do a good job of it.
