The war between Persia and Greece. It has had a profound influence on shaping the relationship between western and eastern nations ever since. The Bosphorus has since always been seen as the outer limit of European civilisation. Every war, and clash of civilisations since has been as a result of this profound shaping of ideologies....

I think that WW1 changed the world for ever and that we are still living under its consequences. It has started the decline of Europe, the emergence of America and the liberation of what we call the third wolrd and that we used to call the colonies. Since 1918 Europe has gradually lost its influence in the world and it is still losing. America is currently facing the same evolution with the war in Iraq. World wars or global wars are the big changing forces of this planet and never have they been as worldy and global as during WW1 and now.

Well, many events in the last century had truly global effects, so it might be recent. On the other hand, I might say that Columbus's "discovery" of the new world had an absolutely enormous impact on the world. Set the stage all the way up to the present day.

It would have to be the birth of Christ. He changed the world in many ways. The religion that sprang up around him would become the official religion of the Roman Empire, by far the most powerful western kingdom ever. Even the barbarians who overthrew Rome were Christians. America would not have been colonized if were not for Christianity. That is why it is the most important event in history. Or the creation of the Earth. Thats sorta a vital step in history.

one would have to look at this through the prism of history. for example the invention of the printing press in the 1400's was a revolutionary change that enabled books to be read by the masses or at least the literate at the time.
one could also say that the discovery of atomic weapons was of great influence as it posed the possibility of ending the world.
so to answer your question, there are more than one, depending upon the time in history.

I would have to say the invention of the wheel by the Sumerians of Mesopotamia. Without the wheel, the world would be a different world. The contributions of the Mesopotamians (Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians) have greatly influenced society today.

Maybe when electricity came to the picture in this world. Can you imagine how the world will look like w/out electric power? Most of the-so-called technologies might not be in use w/out it.

I suspect that the one, most influencial single event in history is one for which we have no reliable historical information.

I refer to the purported execution of a subversive Jewish ringleader on mount Golgotha under the reign of Emperor Tiberius.

The subsequent creation of a religion around him, and the effect said religion has had on the history of ideas and nations is just beyond calculation.

the invention of the wheel. It's all been downhill for the world since then. The devlopment of the simplist machines would not have been possible without it.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor. Without it America would have set out the war and allowed Hitler to develop his A BOMB. The world we know now would have never been.
